Math is Everywhere!

"…Even if you're sitting in math class counting

down the minutes till it's over,

you're still doing math!" Lori

…Many people only see math as a subject in school. However, I see math everywhere that I look. I see math when telling time so that I will not be late. In buying, selling, or just reading about stocks, knowledge of fractions is needed. Even politicians need to know how to compare numbers in the polls to know if they won or lost the election. When deciding what to wear in the morning, I listen to the weather forecast to know what the temperature will be for the day. One of my favorite places to see math is when I look at my grandfather's football team…whether it is how many yards that they gain or lose, how many points that they score, or how many downs that they make, math is there!

…The race that I entered was 800 meters. Since there are approximately 1500 meters in a mile, I ran a little more than ½ of a mile. I ran the race in three minutes and twenty-four seconds…Who would have thought that I would need math for cross-country?

…Amusement parks involve math…the cost of the ticket, the cost of food, the number of people in line, the wait time, the speed, angle and drops of a roller coaster…I see math everywhere that I look! Kaitlin

…when you look at nutrition facts to see if there are too many calories…in a clock to see what time it is…Math is at a casino rolling the dice to see how many points you need…

Matt

When I was putting my collage together, I looked through newspapers and magazines in order to find where math was being used in the world…The first thing that I saw was math being used by people everyday, investing their money, spending their money, and saving their money. In magazines I found math in house plans, space explorations, and recreation. Natalie

…It's true. Math is everywhere. We use it every hour of our life from counting lunch money to counting sheep in bed. Justin

…Without math you would not be able to see how many feet the inside of your house is…you would not know how many games each baseball team won and lost…you would not know how much the stock market went up or down. Michael

…shapes, money, numbers, patterns, decimals and graphs. For example, shapes. Everywhere I look there are shapes…circles and squares…and hearts… Amanda

…For fun people go to casinos where the slot machines give out money to people who play the right numbers or play the right cards…It is good to know math if you gamble or play cards because the better you know math, the better you are at winning. Derek

(Note: Does knowing math really help us to win? You may change your mind when we study probability.)

…Math is measuring flour and sugar in the kitchen. Math is counting the numbers on a clock to see what time it is…Math is using percentage to see if Connecticut has more pollution than Rhode Island…Dates tell us when your birthday is. Arielle

…You can see math when you are at the supermarket watching the cashiers give change and how the machine adds up the totals of your purchase. Take a supermarket flier. In it you will probably find 30% off, 50% off, $4.00 per pound, things like that…In my collage I have pictures of speed limit signs, a nutritional facts label, a test, the ordering of numbers, sale papers, and money. I chose those because I thought they would be good examples of showing how math is everywhere. Kristen

Math…is at the mall because people pay in cash…at the race tracks because they have to time the racers..in clocks because clocks tell time…at baseball games because they have to add up the runs, errors, hits, strikes, balls, and outs. Math is in our heads because we all do it. Amanda

…If you play games you use math to figure out your score. Do you have a combination lock? You are doing math there…When you count money you are doing math…If you use a scale, you are doing math… Sammy

…Whether you are adding money a cash register or measuring a curtain, you are doing math…I close clocks to represent time, tools for measuring, and apples for counting. I also chose a wreath for geometry and, of course, pencils to write with…Ashley

What my collage shows…I put a label from a food box because it has grams, ounces, cups which are different ways to measure…You will also see a little boy seeing how tall he is…Measuring has to do with numbers and numbers have to do with math…math is everywhere. All you have to do is look for it. Haley

We use it (math) all the time. For instance when you are earning your allowance. Suppose every week you receive $3.00. How much would you make in 4 weeks?…If you rode your bike 2 miles a day down the street to your friend's house and back for 5 days straight in a row, you would end up riding 20 miles. Stephen

My collage was about finding numbers and using math in wrestling. For example, you can use division and divide the WWE wrestlers between the Smack Down and the Raw Shows. My collage also showed that the Rock has millions and millions (which are numbers) of fans. When you add Jeff and Matt Hardy together, you get a Two Man Tag Team. When you minus Devon Dudley from the Dudley Boy Tag Team, you get one table smashing Bubba Ray Dudley left. There are a lot of things to count when you're watching wrestling! Joseph

Math is everywhere…the money that people are spending,..(sports) the points the teams earn, the cars' mileage, ..(dentist office) how many teeth that have fillings, (weather) how quickly a hurricane is coming toward our house…Dylan

…It can be used in the supermarket for when you pay for or weigh your food. People use math in sports like basketball, hockey, baseball and bowling or in any other sport to get the score. People use math in business and jobs. My collage also shows it's fun…Math rocks and it's awesome. Math can help you be successful in life. Aaron

I did my collage on skateboarding because some of skateboarding has to do with math…because the rotations you do in the air, like 180 degree spins…also, how many times the board spins. Christopher

…For example, banking. Also sales, marketing, financing a car and using percentages to get money taken off at the store. These are some of the examples my collage shows that math is everywhere. Nicholas

When you look at the nutritional labels on any food item purchased, they show important nutritional information that is helpful to your health… Mary

What math means to me? Math to me is the universal language since every culture somehow some way has math. Math has so much to do with us from ancient times to our very own…my collage shows…pictures of math from Egypt and other cultures…also pictures of numbers inside DNA…and then mathematics with equations. Henry
